Sports programs are done at Sheridan College and Gillette College.
In the face of major cuts in state funding, administrators at the two Northern Wyoming Community College Campuses announced Thursday that their entire athletics programs have been cut. That includes mens and womens basketball and soccer programs at both schools.
The rodeo program is the only program that will continue at both schools, but with a significantly reduced budget.
Cutting athletics will account for a $2.8 million savings in the college district's budget.
The college district also is cutting $500,000 from administration and academic budgets, along with $260,000 from campus police.
The overall budget cuts come to nearly $4 million.
Both Gillette and Sheridan College say that they'll offer academic scholarships to students who were on athletic scholarships.
Coaches will start looking for work elsewhere. 062520

What's the plan for high school football this fall?
That was one of the topics of discussion on Tuesday when the Wyoming High School Activities Association met in person for the first time since the coronavirus shutdown in March.
All six upcoming fall sports — cross country, girls swimming, volleyball, tennis, golf and football — were discussed, and how the various seasons might take place if COVID-19 is still active in Wyoming.
Regarding football, among the ideas considered were a late start to the season and how that might affect postseason seeding, a return to the football power ratings that were done away with in 2009, and playing a shorter season. The board also discussed playing only conference games in all classifications, and talked about returning state championship games to a home stadium for this year if championship games conflicted with a Wyoming Cowboys game at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.
Commissioner Ron Laird said there was even the possibility of not having a football season at all.
No final decisions were made at Tuesday's meeting. 060420

Some rodeo circuit cowboys say they will boycott this year's Cheyenne Frontier Days rodeo because of the new, tournament style format the "Daddy of 'em All" adopted in roping and steer wrestling events.
Under the new format, slack will now become a qualifying round to make it into the rodeo performances in steer roping, tie-down roping, team roping and steer wrestling. Each performance will see event winners and money paid out, and the contestants will start with a clean slate in the finals.
Gering, Nebraska, tie-down roper Riley Pruitt said the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s top 50 tie-down ropers and a number of steer wrestlers will not participate in this year’s event at Cheyenne.
Tie-down roper Hunter Herrin of Apache, Oklahoma, says the change means cowboys will compete more for less money.
Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo Chairman Chad Mathews says that the new format means a better spectator experience and payouts to more contestants. 062119

High School girls softball doesn't get a "no", but it does get a "not yet".
At their board meeting in Casper Tuesday, the Wyoming High School Activities Association said they didn't yet have enough teams committed to sanction girls softball in the spring of 2021.
The WHSAA requires eight member schools for implementation of a sport.
So far, seven schools have approved softball programs... Casper's Kelly Walsh and Natrona High Schools, Gillette's Campbell County and Thunder Basin, Cody, Green River and Rock Springs. Albany County School District No. 1 at Laramie said they would revisit its softball vote after voting its budget for the upcoming 2019-20 school year.
Boys are currently offered 11 high school sports in Wyoming while girls have just 10. 042419

Scotty Mason is retiring.
For more than 30 years, the 6'7" Mason was a halftime fixture at State Basketball Tournaments at the Casper Events Center. A member of the maintenance staff, Scotty would outrun the rest of the staff, clearing the floor with five or six laps around in less than 30 seconds. The crowds would cheer him on as his theme song, "Johnny B Good", rocked the speakers.
While he'll still work part-time on the maintenance crew, age and health won't allow him to appear on the halftime lope anymore.
Scotty Mason was honored with a plaque and cheers during state basketball earlier this month. 031819
